Female Role Cast in Days of Thunder Sequel
Tom Cruise will be joined by Oscar-winning actress, Anne Hathaway, in the sequel to Days of Thunder, which is due out in 2028.
Back in 1990, Paramount’s Days of Thunder was supposed to be a very huge hit. In fact, Premiere magazine had pegged it to be the biggest movie of that summer. Instead, Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore took that tremendous honor. It is now, in fact, Days of Thunder, which is actually getting the big-screen treatment for a sequel. With the success of Top Gun: Maverick dancing in the heads of Paramount executives on top of the success of Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie, A-lister Anne Hathaway has been enlisted to appear in the new upcoming sequel to Days of Thunder.

Cruise will be playing Cole Trickle once again in the follow-up to the moderate hit from 1990. NASCAR fans will likely love the new racing picture, and are eagerly anticipating its release. Jonathan Levine will be helming the would-be blockbuster. Long Shot was one of Levine’s best films, but it was a comedy, not an action film, which makes him an unusual choice to direct a big-budget picture about car racing. June 2, 2028 will see the release of the follow-up to the 1990 Tom Cruise picture, which has developed a cult following over the years.
Hathaway is expected to be a dual nominee at the Oscars this year for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for her lead work in the little seen A24 film, Mother Mary, and her supporting work in the box-office smash, The Odyssey. Hathaway is fresh off her work in several projects, namely the terrific, recently released, dinosaur movie, The End of Oak Street.
Robert Duvall and the central filmmaker of the original, Tony Scott, are no longer with us, so they most likely will not be associated with the sequel at all (especially in the case of Duvall), unless flashbacks or CGI are employed. Though Nicole Kidman was in a principal role in the first film, it is not clear whether or not she will be back in the sequel.
Hathaway and Cruise were featured beside a race car in a photo in the Variety article which broke the news earlier today in order to celebrate the casting of Oscar-winner, Hathaway, who wore a cowboy hat in the photograph. Some people think Tom Cruise could be an Oscar winner, himself, by the time the new Days of Thunder movie is released as Cruise put on a whole new persona for his role in the upcoming Digger, which could land him the Best Actor Academy Award next year.
Many details are being kept under wraps regarding the plot of the new Days of Thunder, and Paramount is probably hoping to make the $82 million the first film made in its entire run during the sequel’s first two days.
