A24 acquired the film at Sundance after a bidding war. Netflix offered $20 million for the streaming rights. Wilde turned it down. A24 got it for $12 million on the condition of a theatrical release. At the Locarno Film Festival, Wilde explained why. “They bribe you to not take theatrical. It’s a bribe. You get paid more. Not me, not the filmmaker. The financiers will get a lot more money to go to streaming, and you can take that bribe and give that up if that’s where your priorities lie.” Amy Adams, Paul Rudd, and Tessa Thompson were originally cast in the lead roles.
